Dear first-year students,
Congratulations on your admission and on choosing to study at our Department. We are committed to doing our very best to meet your expectations and support you throughout your studies.

The welcome and orientation session for first-year students of the Department will take place on Monday, 28 September 2025, at 11:00 a.m., 
at the Kavala University Campus of Democritus University of Thrace.

WELCOME
As Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance of Democritus University of Thrace, and on behalf of its academic, administrative and technical staff, I welcome you to the Department’s official website (af.duth.gr). Whatever brings you here, whether you are a prospective or current student, an alumnus, a colleague from another institution or a representative of a company or public body, I hope the pages that follow give you a clear picture of what we do and how we do it.
The Department has a long presence in Kavala and has consistently been among the larger departments in the field of economic sciences. That standing rests on a certified curriculum, on experienced academic staff whose expertise reaches beyond accounting and finance into areas such as business administration and informatics, and on an administrative office that supports our students daily and reliably. Valued external collaborators contribute to this work as well.
Our subject is changing, and the curriculum follows. The digitalisation of the finance function, from electronic invoicing and data transmission through myDATA to digital payment instruments and fintech services, has shifted where the work of the accountant and the economist actually lies. At the same time, data analysis and artificial intelligence tools are taking over part of the routine, leaving the graduate with the work that calls for judgement, interpretation and responsibility. A further major change is the obligation to disclose non-financial information, with everything this entails for sustainability reporting and assurance. Our curriculum incorporates these developments, with emphasis on the practical application of academic knowledge through the students’ own use of information technologies.
Our graduates continue to hold a strong position in the labour market. Technological change, which has served as a warning to dozens of occupations, does not appear to have harmed the technically well-prepared graduate of this Department, as the high rates of employment in fields related to their studies indicate. Over the past three decades, hundreds of our graduates have built successful careers in Greece and abroad, and we take pride in that.
Three institutionally established research laboratories currently operate within the Department. We organise an annual academic conference, take part in the publication of a scientific journal and in a range of research projects, and offer three postgraduate programmes that admit more than sixty students each year. The Department also participates in international networks, which allow our students to study abroad and bring students from partner institutions here, chiefly during the spring semester. To our incoming students in particular, I offer my congratulations on their choice and my hope that they will use these years to build knowledge, skills and personal development.
