
The Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) is an advisory body of the University and its governing authorities. Its mission is to promote gender equality and combat discrimination based on sex or gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, health status or disability, age, or sexual orientation, across all levels of University operation and throughout all processes and activities of academic life.
The Committee contributes to the prevention and handling of all forms of discrimination, as well as to the prevention and response to sexism, sexual harassment, and all forms of harassing behaviour within the University.
The Committee consists of nine members:
six (6) members of academic staff,
one (1) member of Special Educational Staff, Laboratory Teaching Staff, or Special Technical Laboratory Staff,
one (1) member of administrative staff, and
one (1) student representative.
Responsibilities of the Committee
The Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee:
develops and revises action plans aimed at promoting and safeguarding substantive equality and combating discrimination in the University’s educational, research, and administrative processes; these plans are approved by the Senate, while the Committee also prepares an annual report submitted to the Senate and the Council of Administration;
recommends measures to the competent University bodies for promoting equality, combating discrimination, and addressing sexual harassment and other forms of harassing behaviour;
monitors and evaluates the implementation and outcomes of these measures and proposes their amendment, revision, or supplementation where necessary;
provides information and training to members of the academic community on issues falling within its remit;
promotes the development of study programmes and the organisation of seminars and lectures focusing on issues within its area of responsibility;
encourages studies and research on matters related to equality and discrimination;
records reports and complaints concerning incidents of discrimination, sexual harassment, or gender-based harassment and forwards them to the competent University bodies in accordance with the University’s Internal Regulations and applicable legislation;
provides support to victims of discrimination, sexual harassment, and harassing behaviour when they report incidents of discrimination or harassment.
Submitting a Report to the Committee
Students of DUTH also have the right to submit reports to the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee concerning incidents of discriminatory treatment.
A report may be submitted either by the person who is allegedly the victim of discrimination or by individuals who have witnessed such incidents.
Reports may be submitted under the complainant’s name or anonymously.
